Glossary
Here are some commonly used coffee terms used in the industry – a language which is recognised the world over.
- ACIDITY
- Pleasant tanginess when the coffee first hits the palate, particularly strong with certain origins
- ARABICA
- Beans from the Coffea arabica plant, the most commonly cultivated variety, which produce the best coffee for drinking.
- AROMA
- Powerful and evocative smell which enhances a great cup of coffee
- BODY
- Thickness or heaviness as it feels on the palate during consumption
- FLAVOUR
- ranges from mild to rich and is the most subjective of coffee characteristics.
- ROBUSTA
- beans from the Coffea canephora species of coffee plant - the second most commonly cultivated variety. Robusta contains higher caffeine levels and is more bitter. It is primarily used in commercial and instant coffees.
