Glossary

Here are some commonly used coffee terms used in the industry – a language which is recognised the world over.

ACIDITY
Pleasant tanginess when the coffee first hits the palate, particularly strong with certain origins
ARABICA
Beans from the Coffea arabica plant, the most commonly cultivated variety, which produce the best coffee for drinking.
AROMA
Powerful and evocative smell which enhances a great cup of coffee
BODY
Thickness or heaviness as it feels on the palate during consumption
FLAVOUR
ranges from mild to rich and is the most subjective of coffee characteristics.
ROBUSTA
beans from the Coffea canephora species of coffee plant - the second most commonly cultivated variety.  Robusta contains higher caffeine levels  and is more bitter. It is primarily used in commercial and instant coffees.
