Our Coffee

Wildcat coffee is a boutique coffee roastery based in New Plymouth, New Zealand.

We love the challenge of roasting the perfect roast, and blending the perfect blend for each customer! We are very much a hands-on roasting company and take pride in our product — from the pre-roast inspection of green beans, through to careful small-batch roasting, and finally blending and packaging to order.

Taranaki is well known as the hub of the New Zealand oil industry, Wildcat was the perfect name that is synonymous with the region and our blends are named after offshore drilling terms.

Wildcat wells are drilled based on a large element of hope, in a frontier area where little is known about the subsurface. In the early days of oil exploration, wildcats were common as productive areas were not yet established.

Our boutique roasting company on Queen St in central New Plymouth has won GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE medals in the New Zealand Coffee Festival competition every year since we first started competing in 2007

We struck gold again in 2014! Wildcat Coffee’s new “Sweet Oil” Blend won a gold medal at the 2014 New Zealand Coffee Awards. Wildcat was one of only two roasteries outside Auckland to win a gold.

The success of these wins is due to the soul and personal commitment and energy which goes into every roast, with careful attention to the origin and character of each bean. We single origin roast each bean to maximise the flavour each bean produces, because each bean creates a different expression.

All our coffee is 100% Highest Grade Arabica Beans selected from the world’s best growing areas: Papua New Guinea, Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala and Indonesia.

Roaster John Hinton and owner Jude Nagel, Here at Wildcat Coffee we hand roast in a 5kg Probat Roaster, in small single origin batches to achieve the best roast. Then the beans are combined to create our exceptional blends. Our soul goes into the producing the perfect espresso.
